The History and Significance of the 7th Amendment - $4,000 Please submit an essay of a minimum of 5 pages and a maximum of 7 pages, formatted in MLA style. The essay topic is, "Why is the right to trial by jury (the Seventh Amendment) critical to ensuring justice and democracy?" Possible topics to cover include: What was the historical background behind the decision to pass the 7th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution, and Indiana's counterpart in the State Constitution? How is the right to trial by jury similar or different from rights guaranteed in other countries? What is the purpose of trial by jury? Why is having a jury of peers important in a democracy? Gary E. May Peace Scholarship - $1,000 The scholarship program seeks to “nurture thought to abolish war”. This fall we will present a $1,000 unrestricted cash award to a college-bound or current college student who successfully responds with a written essay in response to a peace-oriented question we will provide. Any high school senior in Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson or Warrick County is eligible, as is any current student at UE, USI or Ivy Tech Southwest. October 15, 2016

Prudential Spirit of the Community Award - $1,000 Any student who has participated in community service at least in part after September 1, 2015 is able to apply to become one of Castle High School's nominees.
