The Deaconess Health Science Institute is a rigorous, two-week summer program for high-achieving high school students in Southwestern Indiana who are interested in exploring healthcare careers. Deaconess Hospital in Evansville sponsors HSI in partnership with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation.

HSI is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a wide variety of health careers first-hand. Students live on the campus of Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for two weeks as they hear from 100+ health professionals, participate in 12 different clinical rotations (including witnessing surgery and hopefully a birth), and explore Deaconess facilities and local universities.  Over the past 26 years, more than 600 students have participated in the program; many are now serving in the healthcare field as physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and others.

The application can be accessed at http://www.deaconess.com/hsi or directly at https://goo.gl/forms/LlTWExIniUmz88d13.  Please see the HSI brochure and video https://youtu.be/-mnnGRx2_zk  for additional information.

Students must be current sophomores or juniors in a Southwestern Indiana high school or home school in Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, or Warrick counties who have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Interested students must submit the completed application and other application requirements (essay, transcript, science teacher evaluation sent via email to the science teacher, and counselor signature) no later than 4:00 pm CST on Friday, January 5, 2018 to:

Dr. Vic Chamness
Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation
951 Walnut Street
Evansville, IN 47713

If you have a high school student and you wish to receive announcements from the counselor, please sign up for Remind 101, a free website that provides a safe way for schools to text message or email students and parents.  Students and parents sign up for notifications by sending a text message with a class code. They may also sign up by sending an email. The medium they sign up with determines how they will receive notifications. So if a student signs up from her phone, she will receive text messages. Likewise, a parent who emails in will receive messages via email.  For more information and FAQ, visit www.remind101.com
