A Little Bit About Us
Tennyson Elementary School reaches out to the northeast corner of the county and has served those students in the Tennyson area since 1911, when the original Tennyson Elementary School was constructed.
A Brief History...
Tennyson Elementary faculty and staff members take pride in working hand in hand with the community and educating students in kindergarten through fifth grade. With 74 students and 19 faculty and support personnel, we get to know your student on an individual level, pushing them to their highest potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
Tennyson Elementary is located on an eight-acre site on the north edge of Tennyson, adjacent to Indiana Highway 161. In 1987, the old classroom building was razed, and the present school was built. The original gym was kept and remodeled.
The one-story school building has been constructed around the original gymnasium, which was also renovated to compliment the addition. Classrooms, library, and administrative offices are organized along a linear corridor at one end of the gymnasium. A raised ceiling area in the corridor identifies the entrance to a cluster of rooms. Nine general purpose classrooms are provided along with special classrooms for music, art, speech, a library, resource room and a computer lab.
Tennyson Elementary participates in NWEA, 4-Block in the primary grades, Study Island, Exact Path, CogAT, and Character Counts! Staff members and students are encouraged to utilize technology to enhance the learning process. A computer lab, Chromebook laptop cart, and iPads are readily available. All teachers have a Chromebook, Promethean Board and Document camera in their classroom.
Tennyson Elementary offers athletics, robotics, musical performances, and participation in a variety of community-based programs. There is an active Student Council group, comprised of third through fifth grade students, who participate in community service, volunteer opportunities, as well as provided services for the whole student body to become a part of.
An active TPT (Tennyson Parent Teacher Organization) plans and staffs a variety of events and fundraisers throughout the year. Tennyson gladly supports the pre-school facility in the community and works with Youth First to provide a "Strengthening Families" program each year for families who want to learn ways to build strong family bonds.
